Whenever I attend the wedding, the first thing I look at isn’t the bride. It’s the groom. I like seeing the way he looks at her, like she’s the only woman in the world and all he could ever ask for was walking down the aisle in a white dress, ready to say yes to a life with him, and to love him for the rest of his life.
Before the wedding: “They wanted to pray together, but not see each other, before the ceremony.”
How perfect is this ?
Freewrite “When a black man says that you are pretty….for a dark skinned girl”
He will nod his head
He will say this with a chuckle in the basement of his throat
As though words like these
Are not smoking pistols
That wound the self-esteem of women who wear midnight on their skin
He will smile
As if he is almost
But not quite willing to excuse the amount of Africa stomping inside of your DNA
What he’s saying
Is that there is a railroad on the color wheel
And you are from the wrong side of tracks
He will treat you as though you were born without knees
And somehow figured out how to crawl
When he pats you on the back
Understand that there is no apology in the trunk
Or a compliment riding shotgun
His wisdom teeth are wearing white hoods
And straddling his tongue like a horse
Don’t let them burn crosswords into your pride
He wouldn’t be able to recognize beauty
If he was pulled out of beauty’s vagina
You are a constellation
And I’ve owned a telescope since the day I was born
Even on days when you feel invisible
I see you

Bob Marley on how to love a woman
“You may not be her first, her last, or her only. She loved before she may love again. But if she loves you now, what else matters? She’s not perfect - you aren’t either, and the two of you may never be perfect together but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break - her heart. So don’t hurt her, don’t change her, don’t analyze and don’t expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she’s not there.”
